Complete Dorm Checklist
This checklist covers the practical items students actually need to move into a dorm room and function for a semester. It is organized by category so families can tackle one section at a time instead of working from an oversized, random list.
Tip: Confirm your student’s residence hall rules before buying appliances, extension cords, adhesive products, or furniture. Dorm policies vary by campus.

Twin XL sheets (2 sets so you can wash one), mattress protector, comforter or duvet, lightweight blanket for layering, pillows, and pillowcases.

Comfort & Personal
Fan if allowed, small rug, photos or decorations, earplugs, eye mask, command hooks and strips, flashlight or headlamp, and other small comfort items.
Documents & Essentials
Student ID, health insurance card, driver’s license, debit and credit cards, secure copies of important documents, prescriptions, and class schedule details.
Optional But Helpful
Whiteboard or corkboard, desk chair cushion, mattress topper, extra throw blanket, reusable shopping bags, small toolkit, sewing kit, and a compact first-week grocery list.
How to use this checklist
Mark each item as buy, pack from home, borrow, wait until move-in, or skip. That approach keeps spending focused and prevents the dorm room from filling up before the student knows what the space actually needs.
